    Thematization Analysis on Basuki Tjahaya Purnama Staement on Surah al-Ma’ida 51

    This paper aims to give a description on depth understanding of Surah Al-Ma’ida 51 and Ahok’s statement analysis related to Surah Al-Ma’ida 51 which is believed that it had insulted Muslim community. The writer used thematisation context to analyze the data. It is done to find out the starting point of Ahok’s utterances as the main key words of the base of the rest sentences. This theme can be inferred as an intention or motivation and also the purpose of the utterances. The writer analyzed the script of the video provided by the Jakarta Post published on Monday 10 Oktober 2016. Hence, after analyzing the syntactical form and also the theme of the utterances, it can be inferred that this statement does not consist any intention of insulting particular religion (Islam). It can be seen from the sentence starting point which is the residents of Thousand Islands and not Surat Al-Ma’ida

    THE PRINCIPLE OF ESP TEACHING: ITS CONCEPT, OBJECTIVES AND COURSE DESIGN

    This article provides a brief description on teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and responses to the issues happening on ESP instruction among foreigner particularly in Indonesia. ESP can be referred to English language teaching for specific career, studies or professionalism. Hence, there is specific reason for which English is learned. The materials and the skills learnt by students are different from General English. As the result, creating an appropriate course design of ESP is also different. Unfortunately, in its implementation, there are still many cases that is not supposed to be happened in ESP learning teaching practice. For instance, in some universities ESP is even practiced like General English. In another cases ESP instruction is even far from the concept of teaching in it. Based on this reason, the writer would like to propose three important items to practice ESP well. It is necessary to the institution, ESP lecturer, and all parties include it, to consider three most important aspects in practicing ESP. Those are ESP concept, ESP objective, and ESP course design.  Hereinafter, after discussing this principle, there will be no longer available to discuss that the wrong perception in ESP practice still happen in university student

    One of the important aspects that need to be considered in the process of instruction is teaching strategies. Hence determining appropriate teaching strategies can improve learning outcomes well. The objective of this research is to know and to describe the strategies of teaching English speaking. It was conducted at Tunas Unggul Junior High School Bandung and used qualitative descriptive method. The data was collected through interview, questionnaire, observation, and documentation. The research found that the teaching English speaking strategies used by the school have been widely influence by communication and students-center strategies. This measure taken has given much beneficial impact to all parties, particularly teachers and students for their English speaking development. Therefore, in teaching speaking, it is important for everyone, particularly educator to develop their teaching strategies which meets to the students need

    Integrating Technologies in the New Normal: A Study of Blended Learning

    The objective of this research is to describe how the teacher integrates technologies in blended learning and to analyze students’ perception and challenges in blended learning. The research was conducted in a private senior high school in Bandung and used a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected through interview and questionnaire. The findings show that the teacher had already integrated technologies to run the process of teaching and learning in the new normal era as a replacement of a face to face learning due to Covid-19 pandemic. In the blended learning, the teacher integrated the variety of technologies in teaching-learning activities, namely zoom meeting and WhatsApp group chatting for the synchronous learning and she utilized google classroom, screencast o matic screen recorder, viva video editor, YouTube, and Quizizz the synchronous learning. The students perceived  blended learning positively and determined that it is it is one of the effective ways of teaching. The biggest challenge overcome by the teacher is more time needed to learn and adapt to this new situation where they must employ technology in our educational culture. For the students, the stability of internet connection also becomes major obstacle in blended learning. Apart from that, blended learning can be an option applied in the learning process in the current pandemic era

    SCAFFOLDING IN TEACHING WRITING NEWS ITEM TEXT, ITS BENEFITS AND CHALLENGES

    The research aimed at investigating types of scaffolding, the ways a teacher provides scaffolding, and benefits and challenges of scaffolding in teaching writing News Item text in tenth graders in a senior high school in Bandung. This research employed a qualitative research design, embracing characteristic of a case study. The data were obtained from non-participant classroom observation for six meetings, and one interview. The data collected from classroom observation and interview were transcribed and then analyzed by using framework of types of scaffolding (e.g Roehler and Cantlon (1997), Hammond (2001), Gibbons, (2002), and Walqui (2006)). The findings revealed that seven types of scaffolding were provided by the teacher   during teaching writing News Item text. The most intensive scaffolding was given in the Modeling stage, while scaffolding was removed in the Independent Writing stage. Regarding the benefits and challenges of providing scaffolding, this research found out the benefits of scaffolding such as to connect students’ prior knowledge with a new concept, to engage students, to minimize the level confusion of students, and to build students‟ self-confidence.     The objective of this research is to know and to describe the process of teaching English speaking. It was conducted at Tunas Unggul Junior High School Bandung and used qualitative descriptive method. The data was collected through interview, questionnaire, observation, and documentation. The research found that the school was using combination curriculum between national and institutional curriculum adapted from IB organization. The concept used in this combination curriculum is actually mostly the same with the general concept of national curriculum, and the school with its own uniqueness elaborates it based on the school needs. This combination curriculum deliberately creates English strategies for developing students speaking ability, both in class and out class. The teaching strategies used have been widely influence by communication and students-center strategies. In order to assess their teaching, teacher used both direct and indirect assessment. This measure taken has given much beneficial impact to all parties, particularly teachers and students, for their English speaking development.
